Eat Wholesome, Natural, Unprocessed Food

Fruit juices are massively popular; vitamins, no added sugar, the perfect breakfast drink, or lunchtime refreshment. A true health food it seems, especially as you can get 1 to 5 of your recommended daily fruit intake from one bottle or carton. Sounds perfect doesn’t it, but all is not well as we’re about to discover.

Your fruit juice may say “100% natural, no additives” on the packet. But this time it’s all about what has been taken away that makes it so unhealthy.

Of course you’re fruit juice is just the juice. The skin and flesh have both been removed, but you knew that. What you probably didn’t know is the skin and flesh are rich with dietary fiber. Fibre slows the absorption of sugar into the blood. So if you eat a piece of raw fruit there is no blood sugar spike, drink a glass of fruit juice and there is a blood sugar spike. And when blood sugar level rises, your body goes into fat storage mode.

And you might be getting 2 of your 5-a-day from that juice, but that doesn’t mean you’re getting the sugar from 2 pieces of fruit. More likely, you’re getting the juice, and sugar, from 10-12 pieces of fruit all at once! Not good for your waistline, I promise you.

My regular readers will know that I’m always telling them to avoid processed sugars no matter what.

But please pay particular attention to the word “processed”. While processed sugar is junk, natural sugar, found in unprocessed foods, is key to your nutritional program and your ability to lose tummy fat.

Quite apart from anything else, fruit tastes great. I have an insatiably sweet tooth and I find that my sweet cravings are completely controlled with a piece of fruit. Even better, it’s a great source of energy and antioxidants. I will go as far as to have a piece of fruit with every meal.

Just remember the golden rule: raw fruit only to avoid spiking our blood sugar!

Control Portion Size

The best way to convert your body into a fat burning furnace is to eat 5 or 6 smaller meals, spread out evenly throughout the day. So the idea is 1-2 pieces of fruit (1 apple, 1 pear, or a hand full of berries) is all you need. Going crazy at eating 6 bananas in one sitting is not such a great idea!

Here’s a little pointer: Make sure all of your meals are balanced (natural sugar, essential fats, protein, fibre). This will put your body into a natural fat burning mode.
